Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

2018 Week 10 Photos

2018 Week 10 Photographs
by Corey Lablans Photography

(41st Week, Year 5 – 1743 days – 1 missed)

2018 03 05 – A Wells beer and a Caesar salad was the pre-dish to a steak and potato dinner. The Caesar salad may have originated in Mexico by an Italian immigrant.

(Nikon D7000 w 17-35 f2.8 @35mm f4 1/40th I.S.O. 400 w SB800)

2018 03 06 – Icicles form along the melting snow bank beside the Rainy River in Fort Frances.

(Nikon D7000 w 80-400 f4.5-5.6 @210mm f8 1/320th I.S.O. 400)

2018 03 07 – My hard hat, decked out with a winter liner, headlamp and earmuffs, just one key part of the personal protective equipment I wear on a daily basis.

(Nikon D7000 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f4.5 1/200th I.S.O. 2000)

2018 03 08 – A few dishes dry in the rack while others await washing. I do most of my dishes in the white tub and rinse them off in the small sink (9.5” x 11.5”).

(Nikon D7000 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f2.8 1/60th I.S.O. 2000)

2018 03 09 – A few bags of blast hole material loaded into the back of our Ford F350 sample truck. The bags range from 4 to 14 kg, averaging around 9 kg.

2018 03 10 – A blast hole drill at night is illuminated by another drill working further down the pattern.

(Nikon D7000 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f4 1/8th I.S.O. 4000)

2018 03 11 – A haul truck backs up to be loaded during the night shift. Hauling material is a 24/7 job with a few downtimes for shift change and breaks.

2018 Week 09 Photos

2018 Week 09 Photographs
by Corey Lablans Photography
(40th Week, Year 5 – 1736 days – 1 missed)

2018 02 26 – A haul truck is loaded while another waits on the 280 bench. The Belaz 75710 is the world’s largest haul truck, with a carrying capacity 496-tones, over twice the size of these trucks.

(Nikon D7000 w 70-200 f2.8 @125mm f4 1/4000th I.S.O. 200)

2018 02 27 – The rising sun shine across some blast hole sample bags ready to be picked up and brought to the assay lab. The material in these bags is analyzed for their gold values in grams per tone.

(Nikon D7000 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f8 1/400th I.S.O. 200)

2018 02 28 – A drill works on a pre-shear pattern in the pit. The pre-shear is important; it helps prevent damage produced by expanding gases from blasts in front. This pre-shear will help prevent damage to the western wall.

(Nikon D7000 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f8 1/640th I.S.O. 200)

2018 03 01 – Increasing spring temperatures have turned a lot of the pit into muck. This water wasn’t there when we did our first run in the morning.

(Nikon D7000 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f4 1/400th I.S.O. 200)

2018 03 02 – Materials outside the assay lab are reflected in melted snow water as temperatures rose to around 6 degrees Celsius. Warmer days are starting to melt the snow but nighttime temperatures still range around -15.

(Nikon D7000 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f5 1/640th I.S.O. 200)

2018 03 03 – A few of the TV box sets and movies I have bought over the past few months. I have been enjoying Deadwood, a western style series that is based on true events in Deadwood, South Dakota.

(Nikon D7000 w 17-35 f2.8 @22mm f4 1/60th I.S.O. 400)

2018 03 04 – This is a variation on a carbonara, an Italian pasta dish. A carbonara typically contains egg yolk and cheese; where as this dish has cream and cheese. It turned out a little gritty, which could have been the result of using grated Parmesan or over heating.

2018 Week 08 Photos

2018 Week 08 Photographs
by Corey Lablans Photography
(39th Week, Year 5 – 1729 days – 1 missed)

2018 02 19 – A couple check out one of the snow carving sculptures at Prince Arthur’s Landing along Thunder Bay’s shoreline. This sculpture is titled “Leonard Cohen,” created by Michael O’Connor and Vic Germaniuk. This year’s theme was Pop Culture.

(Nikon D7000 w 80-400 f4.5-5.6 @185mm f6.3 1/2500th I.S.O. 400)

2018 02 20 – Snow from the night before falls from the trees, glistened by the setting sun. This wooden fence along Nelson Street in Fort Frances made for a lovely winter photograph.

(Nikon D7000 w 80-400 f4.5-5.6 @185mm f8 1/1600th I.S.O. 400)

2018 02 21 – Two larger drills work away on the 280 bench in the main open pit. The pit changes on a daily basis with benches being demolished and new ones being created.

(Nikon D7000 w Sigma 28mm Manual f2.8 @28mm f8 1/500th I.S.O. 200)

2018 02 22 – This is another view of the two drills from the day before. They are continuing on the pattern, drilling 10-meter deep holes for blasting.

(Nikon D7000 w Sigma 28mm Manual f2.8 @28mm f8 1/1000th I.S.O. 200)

2018 02 23 – A Komatsu haul truck waits to be loaded in the main pit. Komatsu was founded in 1917 by Takeuchi Mining Industry to manufacture in house mining equipment.

(Nikon D7000 w 70-200 f2.8 @95mm f4 1/5000th I.S.O. 400)

2018 02 24 – The rising sun starts to light up the western wall of the pit as a drill works on a pre-shear blast pattern. When blasted this acts as a vent to release gases from blasts in front, helping prevent damage to structures. In this case it is helping prevent cracking of the main wall.

(Nikon D7000 w 70-200 f2.8 @75mm f8 1/250th I.S.O. 200)

2018 02 25 – A slice of pizza awaits consumption.

(Nikon D7000 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f4 1/50th I.S.O. 400 w SB800)
