Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

2017 03 06 – An eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) stops for a moment to stare at the camera while at the Lemoine Point Conservation Area.

2017 03 07 – A stir-fry that I made for dinner. Broccoli is high in vitamin C and originates from the Mediterranean.

2017 03 08 – This is either a young pitch pine (Pinus rigida) or white pine (Pinus strobus) at Parrott’s Bay Conservation Area off Taylor Kidd Boulevard.

2017 03 09 – Snow flies through the air as a black capped chickadee (Poecile atricapillus) perches on a branch at the Little Cataraqui Creek Conservation Area. There are 13 different species of chickadees.

2017 03 10 – Friends load up their plates with Chinese food from Silver Wok during a fun night of comedy horror movies, we watched Star Ship Troopers and Cabin in the Woods.

2017 03 11 – A pair of kings sit amongst poker chips during a night of games at a friend’s house. I lost the first round, didn’t play the second and won the third.

2017 02 27 – The new residential units at the corner of Wellington Street and Brock Street are coming closer to completion. The previous law office of Sir John A. MacDonald has been under construction for several years. Past photographs are on: 2014 05 17 and 2014 12 30

2017 02 28 – A northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) perches on a branch in a cedar at Lemoine Point Conservation Area. It is sometimes referred to as the redbird or common cardinal.

2017 03 01 – Water flows around some rocks in a stream off Burbrook Road in Kingston, north of highway 401. A few fresh woodchips can be seen on the left rock, what appears to be the recent activity of a beaver.

2017 03 02 – A great grey owl (Strix nebulosa) perches on top of a fence post at Lemoine Point Conservation Area. The great grey is North America’s longest owl and is sometimes referred to as the Phantom of the North.

2017 03 03 – A female northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) perches on a branch at Lemoine Point Conservation Area. It is the state bird for seven states: Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.

2017 03 04 – Icicles cling to cedar branches along the Lake Ontario shoreline at Lemoine Point Conservation Area. After several warm days, temperatures returned to winter conditions producing the icy shoreline.

2017 03 05 – Beautiful colours of the setting sun are seen through our next-door neighbour’s crab apple tree (Malus). Next week we gain one more hour of sunlight in the evening, as the clocks jump forward.

2017 02 20 – The sun shines on our front porch as temperatures remain above 0 degrees Celsius. Temperatures have been well above the seasonal average for the past several days.

2017 02 21 – The new $6 million Scotiabank branch is almost complete at the corner of Wellington Street and Princess Street in downtown Kingston.

2017 02 22 – A white-breasted nuthatch perches on a branch at the Lemoine Point Conservation Area in the west-end of Kingston. The nuthatch can move head-first down a tree.

2017 02 23 – An American kestrel (Falco tinnunculus) enjoys an evening dinner in the west-end of Kingston near Lemoine Point Conservation Area. The kestrel is also known as the windhover, as it can hover in midair while hunting.

2017 02 24 – Every spring the melting of the snow turns this quiet Wilton river into a fast flowing turbulent river. This is a small branch that is typically a trickle in the summer.

2017 02 25 – Over the past several days I have been playing an old Playstation 2 game called Turok: Evolution. Turok is a first-person shooter originating from a comic series that started in the 1950’s. The actual video game is based on a more modern version of the comic series, Turok: Dinosaur Hunter launched in 1993.
