Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

2017 06 12 – A ferrous rich specimen of grossular garnets from the Marmoraton Iron Mine sits on our back picnic table. The word grossular comes from the botanical name for gooseberry, grossularia. Grossulars in Siberia are the colour of the green gooseberry.

2017 06 13 – Various heavy construction equipment is parked at a construction site of Isle of Man Road north of Kingston on Highway 15. Construction is underway for a new subdivision.

2017 06 14 – The Canadian Coast Guard vessel, Ile Saint-Ours, is docked at Crawford Warf in downtown Kingston. It was built in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia and launched in 1986.

2017 06 15 – A crowd of elementary students watch as the town crier, Chris Whyman, delivers a speech during First Capital Day in Kingston, Ontario. Kingston was the first capital of the United Provinces of Canada from 1841-1844.

2017 06 16 – Several weeks after heavy rain Kingston Mills Road remains closed east of the locks.

2017 06 17 – Members of the Cataraqui Golf and Country Club celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary. They installed a new clock at the club’s front entrance, along with commissioning a beautiful oil painting that will be on display in the club.

2017 06 18 – A mother and her children look over various polished mineral ornaments during the Kingston Lapidary and Mineral Club’s 48th annual show at the Cataraqui Arena. This was a new venue and first time holding the show in June.

2017 06 05 – A stack of echinoderm pieces that collected last year at the Hungry Hollow clay pits west of London, Ontario. This phylum is characterized by it radial symmetry, it includes starfish.

2017 06 06 – A photograph looking out through a 20 passenger school bus window after checking to make sure no more students were left on. This week I’m picking students up north of highway 401.

2017 06 07 – A groundhog (Marmota monax) takes a look around while standing on some rocks along Royal Military College shoreline in Kingston, Ontario. Groundhogs are also sometimes referred to as woodchucks or whistlepigs.

2017 06 08 – A young duckling makes its way up some rocks at Lake Ontario Park. The only state that it is currently illegal to own a mallard duck is Florida.

2017 06 09 – A seagull squawks, thinking it will get some food. Seagulls and other waterfowl flock to Confederation Basin in Kingston, as many people feed them.

2017 06 10 – A participant splashes into water at the end of a large slip and slide down Fort Henry hill during the annual Cannonball Crush. It is a 5-kilometer run around Fort Henry involving 15 different obstacles.

2017 06 11 – A few horses near Craigmont, Ontario find refuge from the sun as temperatures hover around 30 degrees Celsius.

2017 05 29 – Pat reacts as Megan gives her a bowling pin signed by various friends and family during her 60th birthday party at Cloverleaf Bowling Lanes.

2017 05 30 – The sun shines through the edge of a cumulus cloud as it makes its way towards Kingston. A few thunderstorms rolled south and north of Kingston that evening.

2017 05 31 – I cooked a few perogies and English muffins for lunch. Perogies are a Central and Eastern European dumpling dish, also known as a varenyky.

2017 06 01 – A maple sapling grows along the boardwalk at Marshland Conservation Area off Front Road.

2017 06 02 – A plane is silhouetted as it heads off towards Toronto flying amongst the clouds as the sunsets. Seven flights take off every day, serviced by Air Canada.

2017 06 03 – A mineral collector looks over extracted material from the Marmoraton Iron Mine north of Belleville. The mine began operation in the 1950’s and closed in the 1970’s.

2017 05 22 – A kiteboarder glides along the surface of Lake Ontario in front of Breakwater Park in Kingston, Ontario.

2017 05 23 – A beautiful yellow purple Osteospermum in our front garden, it is a smaller tribe of the sunflower/daisy family. A tribe is a taxonomic rank above genus, but below family.

2017 05 24 – Orographic style clouds forms over top of cumulous clouds south of Kingston as a few late afternoon storms develop.

2017 05 25 – Mind Twist, one of the Masterpiece Series: Amonkhet Invocation cards that I uncovered when opening a booster pack.

2017 05 26 – Water droplets sit on a Pelargonium domesticum or more commonly known as an ‘Elegance Rose Bicolour’ in our front garden. Sometimes referred to as geraniums, they belong to the same family as Geraniums (Geraniaceae) but they do not belong the Geranium genus.

2017 05 27– A sign that I made up for the day’s garage sale, posted at Bayridge and Woodbine Drive. It was a beautiful day and the garage sale went very well.

2017 05 28 – A dog walks through the water at Confederation Park in downtown Kingston. It is unusual to see the water this high, typically it is 2-4 feet lower and you can sit on these rocks.
