Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

2016 09 12 – Queen’s University students make their way through campus during the first day of classes. Queen’s welcomed 4,517 first year students making up the class of 2020.

2016 09 14 – The Print & Copy Centre in the John Deutsch University Centre was very busy during the first week of classes. The service began in 1988 when students wanted a cost effective printing outlet.

2016 09 15 – Workers install slatwall into newly constructed display cases inside Miller Hall. These new cases will feature displays on various geological resources such as: gold, zinc, nickel and industrial minerals.

2016 09 17 – Beautiful flowers, a guest book and photos of Pam Lablans (my grandma) decorate a table at the front entrance of the Emerald Community Centre for a celebration of life gathering. She passed away on August 16th at the age 85.

2016 09 05 – Queen’s Engineering Society members repaint the crests from the past four years outside of Clark Hall. Each year a new crest is developed for the incoming students.

2016 09 06 – 3,373 students, faculty and community members gather on Nixon Field at Queen’s University to break the Guinness World Record for the largest human letter. Dell Technologies was the previous record holder forming the letter E with 2,166 people.

2016 09 07 – A upper year Queen’s engineering student, known as a Frec, is dyed purple during one of the engineering orientation events. Gentian, hexamethyl pararosaniline chloride is what is used to dye the skin purple.

2016 09 08 – First year Arts and Science student roll around in sand during Orientation Week’s Frosh Olympics at City Park. The day’s events include numerous games involving mud and shaving cream.

2016 08 29 – Construction workers put the finishing touches on a new sidewalk along Lancaster Drive. In North America the legal terminology is “sidewalk” while in the United Kingdom it is “footway.”

2016 08 30 – Mason workers continue replacing limestone blocks on Ontario Hall while people walk along the side of University Avenue. Completed in 1903 it was built to house the Faculty of Mining and Agriculture. It now houses the Department of Art.

2016 08 31 – Queen’s University students make their way across University Avenue during a torrential rain storm. It was impossible to stay dry; so much rain came down in 10 minutes.

2016 08 22 – A family looks through material brought out of the Blue Point Amethyst Mine east of Thunder Bay, Ontario. The amethyst was introduced as quartz veins during rifting approximately 1 billion years ago.

2016 08 23 – The owner of the Blue Point Amethyst Mine blasted for us on Sunday night providing fresh weak zones. Alf, Rob and Dan are working on removing a large boulder broken off during the blast.

2016 08 24 – Bob works at removing amethyst from the wall of a large pocket while at a claim northeast of Thunder Bay. The land split apart roughly 1 billion years ago opening up veins where amethyst crystals grew.

2016 08 25 – A large cluster of hematite coated amethyst surrounded by beautiful purple amethyst from the Blue Point Amethyst Mine. This is a small portion of the crystals collected over a week.

2016 08 26 – A person sits on a lamppost while big signs from the Thunder Bay Ribfest fill the background.
