Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

2014 07 21 – A beautiful top sirloin lightly coated in a herb rub and cooked for 70 minutes around 325 Fahrenheit. This cut of meat comes from the back of the cow, just below the tenderloin.

2014 07 22 – Chris, one of the student geologist at the Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce, examines a mineral for a collector while out on tour to Craigmont Corundum Mine. The Canadian Corundum Company began operation in 1900 and it lasted until 1913 when a fire destroyed the mill.

2014 07 23 – A silhouette is cast against the back wall of the Millennium Park stage in Bancroft as the Coe Hill Girls perform during the Mineral Capital Concert Series.

2014 07 24 – A few mineral collectors look through the soil at Millar’s Mine during a Mineral Collecting Tour. The “Mine” was opened in 1900 as a prospecting location for radioactive minerals and phosphate.

2014 07 25 – Members of the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp learn how to play the drums during a drum camp taught by Carol.

2014 07 26 – One of the most complete and well formed quartz crystals to come from the Bear Lake Diggings locality near Tory Hill, Ontario. Derek and Barb discovered this beauty this past week.

2014 07 27 – Two ladies examine various mineral specimens while attending the 18th annual Bancroft Gem & Mineral Club show. The local show is held one week before the Gemboree.

2014 07 14 – A large section of the old Nortel (Northern Telecom) plant off Gardiners Road in Kingston is currently under demolition. Nortel was founded in Montreal, Quebec back in 1895.

2014 07 15 – A beautiful apatite crystal that I pulled out of a vug at the Schickler Fluorite Mine in Wilberforce while leading a mineral collecting tour. Probably one of the nicest ones I have seen pulled out. Apatite’s main use is for its phosphate to use in fertilizer.

2014 07 16 – The lead performer of the Jamie Pounder Band performs during the Mineral Capital Concert Series at Millennium Park. They perform a wide array of music from classic rock to country.

2014 07 17 – A family examines a blue spotted salamander while on a mineral collecting tour to the Princess Sodalite Mine near Bancroft. Numerous types of salamanders are found while digging in the soil such as: the blue spotted, the yellow spotted and the red lined salamander.

2014 07 18 – Two girls build a sand castle at Candos Beach in North Kawartha east of Apsley on highway 620. It is a nice clean beach with shallow water, equipped with change rooms and outhouses.

2014 07 19 – A boy looks for minerals at the CN Rock Pile in Bancroft during a Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce mineral collecting tour. The material at the CN Rock Pile comes from the Goulding-Keene Quarry.

2014 07 20 – People walk through the weekly antique market at Spring Market Square in Kingston. The word antique comes from the Latin word “ante” meaning before and then “antiquus” meaning former or ancient.

2014 07 07 - Several of my calcite specimens from all over North America in a new display case I picked up the other day. Calcite is my favourite mineral with over 300 varieties and forms.

2014 07 08 – A couple of girls on tour dig through the soil at Miller’s Mine near Tory Hill. The mine was originally prospected for uranium and phosphate in the early 1900’s.

2014 07 09 – All Strings Considered performs to a crowd of people enjoying the nice evening at Millennium Park in Bancroft during the Mineral Capital Concert Series. Every Wednesday evening there is live music at the park starting at 7:00 p.m.

2014 07 10 – Two black bears enjoy a dinner at the North Baptist dump near Bancroft. Black Bears can reach speeds of 35 mph and can live upwards to 25 years in the wild.

2014 07 11 – Here is the tombstone of Patrick O’Neill at the Umphraville Cemetery off Old Hastings Road. Born 1794 in Wicklow, Ireland he passed away in 1885. This is the only tombstone, we could find, along the Homestead Scenic Trail belonging to a gentleman born in the 1700’s.

2014 07 12 – Members of the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp laugh and smile as one of the young kids picks a ticket for the 50/50 draw after dinner. The trailer camp holds activities every weekend.

2014 07 13 – A street performer from Australia entertains a crowd on Ontario Street in Kingston during the 26th Kingston Buskers Rendezvous. The first known use of the word Busker was around 1857, which is believed to come from the Spanish word Buscar, “to seek.”

2014 06 30 – In the background is the BINGO card that I won on while playing at the legion in Bancroft. Four other people won, so it was split 4 ways, getting $10 each. Every Monday the hall opens at 5:00 p.m. and BINGO starts at 7:00 p.m.

2014 07 01 – A gentleman braces with his paddle while surfing a wave during a practice run on the Madawaska River. The Madawaska Kanu Centre is holding their annual slalom race on Wednesday, July 2nd.

2014 07 02 – Rick Fines performs during the second week of the Mineral Capital Concert Series at Millennium Park in Bancroft. He is an amazing guitarist who plays folk and blues music.

2014 07 03 – Participants look through the minerals at the Beryl Pit in Quadeville during the second Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce mineral tours. Thirty-two participants came out and found some amazing samples of beryl and amazonite.

2014 07 04 – A girl peers over her father’s shoulder as lights from an amusement ride decorate the background while at the midway in Bancroft. The midway is part of this weekend’s, “Wheels, Water & Wings,” event.

2014 07 05 – A tintype photograph of myself taken by Don Wilson of Granite Farm Fotoworks in Coe Hill. Don set up his 8x10 large format camera just off the main street in Bancroft, taking photographs during Wheels, Water & Wings. Adolphe-Alexandre Martin was the first to describe the process back in April 1853.

2014 07 06 – Two ladies examine various mineral specimens at the Prince Edward County Rock, Gem and Mineral Club show, “From the Earth and Beyond,” at the Crystal Palace in Picton. In its third year, they switched to a two-day show.
