Photography is the documentation of life, once that shutter has clicked, the moment has passed and history is made. Some may be familiar with project 365, a simple concept, take a photograph everyday for 365 days. This blog is an extension of the project; the goal is to keep photographing every day, who knows how long? It is an excellent archive to look back on, see how things change. Change can be subtle, such as different coloured flowers being planted each year to a changing landscape with buildings being demolished and new ones built. This blog archives life’s diversity and my encounters.

(Week 37 photographing daily)

This past week was filled with adventure. In the middle of the week I drove to Ottawa to visit James, went skating on the canal and watched The Lego Movie. It has been 14 years since I was last skating on the canal, if not longer. Reading week started that weekend, which meant Kentucky. Saturday morning we departed bright and early at 6:00 a.m. for Slade, Kentucky. It snowed over night, so on Sunday we went for a hike to the natural bridge. This is my fourth year climbing in Kentucky with the Queen’s Climbing Club.

2014 02 10 – Tim Hortons is reflected in a pool of water at the Queen’s Centre as melting snow from boots accumulates. The Queen’s Centre, which is part of the Athletics and Recreational Centre, opened in December 2009.

2014 02 11 – A student is reflected in a puddle along Union Street in front of the John Deutsch University Centre. Puddle comes from the Old English word “pudd,” meaning ditch or furrow, which then comes from German “Pfudel” meaning pool.

2014 02 12 – People line up at the BeaverTail hut located on the Rideau Canal. I always remember the only place getting BeaverTails was on the canal until they expanded. BeaverTails come from the small town of Killaloe, Ontario.

2014 02 13 – A long line of students await buses outside of the John Deutsch University Centre waiting to go home for Reading Week. The Tricolour Outlet organizes busses to main cities such as Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto.

2014 02 14 – Various climbing gear is laid out on the floor in preparation for this year’s reading week trip to the Red River George in Slade, Kentucky. It is amazing there; the sandstone walls make for some amazing routes.

2014 02 15 – Frank, Louise, Lena and Nick sit in the van at a Wendy’s in Lexington, Kentucky after 16 hours of driving with one more hour to our destination. We left Kingston at 6:00 a.m. and arrive in Slade, Kentucky at 11:15 p.m.

2014 02 16 – Members of the Queen’s Climbing Club stand along the top of a sandstone cliff at the National Bridge State Resort Park with the natural bridge in the background. The park is one of Kentucky’s original four state parks and was founded in 1896 as a tourist site.

At the beginning of the week snow started melting and by the end it was falling. With the change in weather, sporting events and FebFest this was an excellent week for photographing. Melting snow permits unique photo opportunities. Always think outside the box and try to see the world through a different perspective.

2014 02 03 – A student walks by a puddle in front of Freddie’s Grocery at the corner of University Avenue and William Street. Temperatures were just below 0, with so much salt some of the ice was able to melt.

2014 02 04 – Maria makes her way up one of the climbs at the Boiler Room located at 4 Cataraqui Street north of the La Salle Causeway.

2014 02 05 – A student walks down 5th Field Company Lane on Queen’s Campus as another storm passes through.  It coated Kingston in 15 cm of snow and caused another massive pile up on the 401 near Trenton.

2014 02 06 – Icicles line the upper level roof of a house off Johnson Street in Kingston. Icicle is derived from two Middle English words “is = ice” and “ikel = icicle,” meaning that icicle is actually, “an ice icicle.”

2014 02 07 – Queen’s Gaels #9 (Gemma Ballard) looks over to a team mate while Ottawa Gee-Gees #13 (Catherine Traer) blocks the net during a regular season Ontario University Athletics game at the Athletics and Recreational Centre. Queen’s won 51-47.

Week 35 was filled with a wide variety of photographs. At the start of the week high winds and snow shut down Bayridge Drive near the airport. On Wednesday several others and I started helping out at the Miller Museum and on Friday Cirque 2014 kicked off.

2014 01 27 – A police cruiser is parked at a blockade at the end of Bayridge Drive as the police officer re-positions the blockade that people moved. A section of Bayridge Drive was closed due to white out conditions as wind whipped across the open airfield located beside the road.

2014 01 28 – Students walk to and from class at Queen’s University as winter continues to rage on in Kingston. Temperatures were cold this morning but the skies were a beautiful blue until 2:00 p.m. when the snow started to descend.

2014 02 01 – Tracks that I made early in the day are covered in fresh snow and lead to my car parked behind work. Arriving at work I got my car stuck in the snow, after a few attempts and then the help of some good citizens the car finally arrived at its location in the photo.

2014 02 02 – Today was a relaxing day chilling in my housecoat but it was a day of work: completed my GPHY209 lab, got online chemistry assignments done and prepped for tomorrow’s labs.
