2014 01 20 – Students walk along Union Street at Queen’s University. Queen’s University was established in October 16^th, 1841. Prior to 1852 Queen’s was located in various houses across the town.

2014 01 21 – Paint peels off the ceiling in the front entrance of Jeffery Hall, the department of mathematics and statistics at Queen’s University.

2014 01 22 – Icicles form along a branch as water slowly drips down from the side of a building off William Street.

2014 01 23 – The shadow of a stop sign is cast across the sidewalk on Aberdeen Street as two people walk by.

2014 01 24 – Fred, Alex, Andres and Chelsey check out the room at the Holiday Inn Express in Guelph, Ontario after a 4.5 hour drive. It was a good that we were headed westbound because the eastbound was closed in numerous sections due to multi-vehicle accidents.

2014 01 25 – A competitor positions himself to finish route 30 at the University Bouldering Series hosted by Grand River Rocks in Kitchener, Ontario. A total of 200 competitors in three categories competed, tackling various bouldering routes from 1 – 50. This was my first competition, placing 22 out of 42.

2014 01 26 – A window at the back of Camera Kingston in downtown Kingston is surrounded by old limestone blocks. Kingston is known as the Limestone City.

This past week I was in Ottawa working Queen’s Model Parliament from Wednesday to Saturday. While I was there I visited a few of the various sites such as National Gallery of Canada and the Rideau Canal. These are the various photos from week 33 photographing daily.

2014 01 13 – A few Queen’s Geology students have fun in the Bruce Wing of Miller Hall while waiting for the Monday night Terrain Evaluation lab. This week we were introduced to G.I.S. software.

2014 01 14 – Ice builds up along the shoreline of Horsey Bay at the end of Bayridge Drive. Cold temperatures a week ago froze the bay and high winds drove the ice up on the stony beach. Increased temperatures have melted a lot of the ice and produced the fog this morning.

2014 01 15 – Located in downtown Ottawa along Wellington Street, the new Claridge Plaza condos are expected to open in 2014. Condos/apartments range from $208,000 to $594,000.

2014 01 16 – The Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica in Ottawa bas built between 1841 and 1865, although it was not fully completed until 1885. In 1879 that cathedral was presented the status of basilica.

2014 01 17 – People skate on the Rideau Canal in downtown Ottawa, the world’s largest skating rink. This year the canal opened on December 31^st, the earliest it has opened since 2004.

2014 01 18 – Currently I have 372+ movies ranging from horrors such as Freddy to comedies like EuroTrip. Some of my favourite movies include: Lord of War, Into the Wild, The Patriot and Gladiator.

This past week had no goal, no theme, so it ended up being a mix of whatever happened. The weather dominated at the beginning and sports took over, enjoy. 

2014 01 06 – A student walks along a path beside Miller Hall at Queen’s University as a truck spreads salt and sand getting ready for tonight’s flash freeze. Temperatures are going from 1 degC this morning to -15 degC tonight, feeling more like -27 with wind-chill. (Nikon D7000 w 55mm Macro f2.8 @55mm f4 1/200^th I.S.O. 100) 

2014 01 07 – Freezing temperatures and high winds have left Lake Ontario looking like the surface of shattered glass. Freezing temperatures were the result of the polar vortex shifting southwards, a cold-low pressure systems lies above the North Pole. (Nikon D300 w 50 f1.8 @50mm f8 1/2000^th I.S.O. 200)

2014 01 08 – An eastern grey squirrel peers out of a garbage can at Queen’s University. Their adaptive nature and introduction to the UK has lead to the displacement of the native red squirrel in many areas. (Nikon D300 w 70-200 f2.8 @200 f4 1/2500^th I.S.O. 400) 

2014 01 09 – Students skate on Tindall Field at Queen’s University, an artificial turf that soccer is usually played on. After a week of cold temperature, followed by warm temperatures and then a sudden deep freeze, the surface of practically any field has become a skating rink. 2014 01 10 – Queen’s Gaels #16, Kelly Jackson, gets a hold of the puck as Carleton Ravens #13, Damian Cross, goes for it during a regular season Ontario University Athletics game at the Memorial Centre. Carleton defeated Queen’s 4-1. (Nikon D7000 w 70-200 f2.8 @105mm f2.8 1/500^th I.S.O. 4000) 

2014 01 11 – Waterloo Warriors #4, Gillian Henderson, digs the ball after a serve by the Queen’s Gaels during Saturday’s match at the Athletics and Recreational Centre. Waterloo fell to Queen’s 3-0. (Nikon D7000 w 70-200 f2.8 @175mm f2.8 1/650^th I.S.O. 4000) 

2014 01 12 – Guelph Gryphons #18, Kayla McMullen, digs the ball during Sunday’s OUA match-up against the Queen’s Gaels at the Athletics and Recreational Centre. Guelph ended up taking three straight sets to win it 3-0. (Nikon D7000 w 70-200 f2.8 @130mm f2.8 1/640^th I.S.O. 4000)

Time is something to treasure, as it can never be regained. Photography provides a reasoning to get out; it allows one to preserve slices of time, what once was. In a decade if these photos are viewed, hopefully several elements of life can be determined such as: cold temperatures occurred, the lake froze and fireworks signify the celebration that a new year awaits.

2013 12 30 - Working security I am not suppose to use my cell phone, so I got back into watches. This turned into me getting several watches for different occasions. (Nikon D7000 w 55 f2.8 Macro @55mm f2.8 1/100^th I.S.O. 100 & Umbrella Strobe)

2013 12 31 – Fireworks light up the night sky above Kingston during New Years Eve celebrations. There are two main colour-producing mechanisms for fireworks: incandescence and luminescence. The first involves heat, while the second involves energy changes in elements. (Nikon D300 w 17-35 f2.8 @35mm f8 2.5sec I.S.O.400)

2014 01 01 – Snow lightly coats a old wooden fence off Highway 2 west of Kingston on this cold January day with temperatures houvering around -13 degC, -20 degC with wind-chill. (Nikon D300 w 17-35 f2.8 @17mm f10 1^st: 1/160^th 2^nd: 1/320^th I.S.O. 400)

2014 01 02 – Snow drifts form between the cars at the Condie Automotive dealership off Gardiners Road as temperatures reach -35 degrees Celsius with wind-chill. Degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit become converge at -40.  (Nikon D300 w 17-35 f2.8 @28mm f4 1/20^th I.S.O. 200)

2014 01 03 – After two nights of freezing temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius Lake Ontario was able to freeze over for the first time this year. In the background is Fort Frederick Martello Tower located at Point Frederick, which was built in 1846. (Nikon D300 w 70-200 f2.8 @70mm f8 1/800^th I.S.O. 200)

2014 01 04 – Large waves roll into the shallow waters on the south side of Amherst Island, as ice covers the water creating a cool effect. Wind turbines are seen in the background on Wolfe Island; something that is being considered for Amherst Island, which has stirred up a lot of controversy. 2014 01 05 – The eye of a leopard gecko, which is my first pet named Lizzy. I got Lizzy in September of 1998. They are native to the deserts of Pakistan and northwestern India. (Nikon D7000 w 55mm Macro f2.8 @55mm f2.8 1/100^th I.S.O. 100)
