2015 08 24 – Various returning dons socialize during a returner’s meeting on the first day of the 2015-2016 residence don training. This is a two-week intense period covering bystander intervention, SafeTalk and other residence related topics.

2015 08 25 – Residence dons from the WaChow Team, a combination of Waldron Tower and Chown Hall, are taught various Balinese dance moves. Waldron Tower was built in 1968, while Chown Hall was completed in 1960.

2015 08 26 – Various Queen’s Residence dons watch on as another group discusses the merits of different programming. The various types of programs we run include: passive, active, community and hosting.

2015 08 27 – Residence dons from the WaChow Team watch a College Humor video titled “All R.A. Floor.” At Queen’s we are referred to as dons while at other institutions they are called Residence Assistants (R.A.).

2015 08 28 – Dons from the WaChow Team converse during breakfast at Leonard Cafeteria. This is the first year that Waldron and Chown have been paired together.

2015 08 29 – A few paper t-rex creations that I made in the don resource room for floor decorations.  So far I have created four toucans, a few t-rex, dragonflies, leaves and bananas.

2015 08 30 – A player from the Queen’s Gaels drops the ball, leading to a change in possession, during their first regular season OUA game against the Carleton Ravens. Queen’s quickly regained possession and ended up winning 34-24.

2015 08 17 – A beautiful golden glow reflects off the water at Piccadilly Bay from the Piccadilly Head Regional Park on the Port au Port Peninsula, Newfoundland.

2015 08 18 – Dr. Alex Dececchi makes his way down a stairway to Highlands River at Bay St. George along the western coast of Newfoundland. The community was once a key location for goods arriving from Europe.

2015 08 19 – A few people look out at the ocean while approaching Nova Scotia on the way back from Port aux Basques, Newfoundland after making the 178 kilometer journey.

2015 08 20 – A tour guide explains the age of the sedimentary rocks along the coast of Joggins, Nova Scotia. These rocks are Carboniferous dating back to around 310 million years and are host to many prehistoric flora and fauna.

2015 08 21 – Sadly the first day that I have missed. 

2015 08 22 - A variety of thumbnail size minerals, both found and bought, that are part of my collection. Thumbnails sized minerals range in size from 0.2 to 3 cm.

2015 08 10 – Dr. Guy Narbonne discusses the processes and merit regarding the UNESCO World Heritage Site application for Mistaken Point, Portugal Cove South, Newfoundland in preparation for September’s site visit.

2015 08 11 – Dr. Guy Narbonne and Dr. Alex Dececchi examine Ediacaran fossils on the Queen’s surface at Mistaken Point. The Ediacaran is a time period in the geological time scale ranging from 570-550 millions years ago and signifies when life got big.

2015 08 12 – Dr. Alex Dececchi makes his way up a ridge after examining Ediacaran fossils at Lower Mistaken Point near Portugal Cove South, Newfoundland. A previous post-grad referred to this path as the “Road to Mordor” due to the drop-off on both sides.

2015 08 13 – Water flows from the Bristy Cover River on its way out to the Ocean at Brisky Cover in the Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve at Portugal Cove South, Newfoundland.

2015 08 14 – A photograph of myself setting up my new Mountain Hardwear Drifter 2 tent at the Elliston Municipal Campground. It is an excellent campground located at the end of the Bonavista peninsula and was originally known as Bird Island Cove.

2015 08 15 – A photograph of myself sitting on angular siliceous mudstone beds in the Catalina area while doing some fieldwork on Ediacaran fossils. We have been exploring the Bonnavista and Mistaken Point area, trying to understand these complex life forms.

2015 08 16 – One of Elliston, Newfoundland’s 135 root cellars at the Puffin Viewing Site is surrounded by stars late in the night. Elliston is known as the “Root Cellar Capital of the World” and it is home to a large gathering of puffins.

2015 08 03 – A replica of a prosauropod dinosaur, Plateosaurus, dominates the interior of the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia while many other Triassic animal replicas are seen in the background.

2015 08 04 – Alex and I driving onto the Marine Atlantic Blue Puttees ferry in North Sydney, Nova Scotia on our way to Newfoundland. The 199.5 meter long ferry is named after a Newfoundland regiment that fought during World War I in France at Beaumont-Hamel.

2015 08 05  - Various tourists and Newfoundlanders look out to an iceberg floating outside of By The Sea Inn & Café at King’s Point. One of the largest icebergs recorded is the Iceberg B-15 that caved off the Ross Ice Shelf in Antarctica and was 11,000 km².

2015 08 06 – Paleontologists exam Ediacaran fossils on the Bonavista Peninsula near Little Catalina in Newfoundland. The main organism on this surface is fractofusus, a branching oval fern looking fossil.

2015 08 07 – Waves crash across the rugged coastline at Trinity Bay, Port Union, Newfoundland. Port Union is home to the only “Union Built Town” constructed in the early 1900’s.

2015 08 08 – An Atlantic puffin soars through the air at the Elliston puffin viewing site in Newfoundland. Puffins burrow into loose material on cliff tops where they lay a single egg.

2015 08 09 – The view looking outside the Trepassey Motel and Restaurant in Trepassey, Newfoundland on a foggy rainy day. The Grand Banks off the coast of Newfoundland holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the foggiest place in the world.

2015 07 27 – Excavators outside of Theological Hall await further work during maintenance on underground infrastructure. This excavator is significantly smaller then the Bucyrus RH400, the largest hydraulic excavator with a height of 3 stories and a bucket load of 57 cubic yards.

2015 07 28 – The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes is reflected in the dry dock off Ontario Street in Kingston. The museum was founded in 1975.

2015 07 29 – A member of the Queen’s University intramural baseball team, Sliding Plates, makes his way around second base on his way home after a big hit.

2015 07 30 – I am using Sally Hansen Ultimate Shield to apply a catalogue label to a new quartz specimen, purchased last weekend from the Bancroft Mineral Show.

2015 07 31 – A double rainbow is seen behind a barn off Sunbury Road (County Road 12) north of Kingston. The band between the two rainbows is known as Alexander’s band, after Alexander of Aphrodisias who first described it.

2015 08 01 – A cumulous cloud is seen in the distance behind Food Basics off Bath Road, as cirrus clouds create wisps higher in the atmosphere.

2015 08 02 – Alex and I heading into the Lafontaine Tunnel, while passing through Montreal, on our way to Elgin, New Brunswick. Construction of the tunnel took 4 years to complete and is 1391 meters long.
