The last week of 2013 offered a wide variety of subjects to photograph. The ice remained on the trees for the majority of the week, permitting some great scenery. Christmas Eve and Day were filled with activities and then on Boxing Day I had an excellent time visiting friends in Toronto, going to various pubs. Here are the photos from this past week, enjoy.

2013 12 23 - Ice coats a one way sign along Princess Street in Kingston a day after a major ice storm. Freezing rain is produced when rain droplets are super cooled in the atmosphere allowing them to freeze on contact. (Nikon D300 w 17-35 f2.8 @32 f2.8 1/1250^th I.S.O. 200)

2013 12 24 – Reverend Bill McAuslan of Crossroads United Church lights candles before the 6:30 Christmas Eve service. In 2010 Queen’s Street and St. Margarets United amalgamated to form Crossroads. (Nikon D300 w 17-35 f2.8 @33mm f2.8 1/40^th I.S.O. 20000)

2013 12 25 – Pam, grandmother on my father’s side, opens up a present Christmas morning at her house. It was a picture of Dale, Sydney, Wendy and her in Jamaica, a trip they just got back from a week earlier. (Nikon D300 w 17-35 f2.8 @35mm f4 1/80^th I.S.O. 250)

2013 12 26 – Fuller’s London Pride is a mahogany coloured beer with a smooth taste. Fuller’s Brewery was established in 1845 in Chiswick, West London. (Nikon D7000 w 55 f2.8 @55mm f2.8 1/250^th I.S.O. 4000)

2013 12 27 – Snow and ice cling to tree branches outside St. George’s Cathedral built between 1825 and 1828. A fire damaged the inside in 1899 and shortly after it was restored. (Nikon D300 w 17-35 f2.8 @35mm 1/2500^th I.S.O. 200)

2013 12 28 – A C-GYNG Ornge Air Ambulance AgustaWestland AW139 is an Italian made medium twin-turbine helicopter that can reach a maximum speed of 310 km/h and carry 15 passengers. 2013 12 29 – Hydro lines run west-east across HWY 6 north of Amherstview. Ontario hydro bills are calculated by “time-of-use” where the cost per kilowatt-hour is based on the time of the day: Off-peak (7.2 C) Mid-peak (10.9 C) and On-peak (12.9 C). This past week was an eventful week with the largest fire Kingston has seen in decades followed by an ice storm that tried to rival that of 1998. Events such as those make for amazing photography opportunities. As exciting as it is to photograph these events, no one wants them to occur but when they do hopefully I’m around to photograph.

2013 12 16 – The moon rises over top of some apartment buildings across the Inner Harbour. The moon is roughly 384,400 km away from Earth with a circumference of 10,917 km (Earth’s circumference is 40,075 km). (Nikon D300 w 70-200 f2.8 @190mm f4 1/100^th I.S.O. 200)

2013 12 17 – A female mallard ducks floats in the water along the shoreline as small waves role in at Horsey Bay at the end of Bayridge Drive. Mallards are dabbling ducks (Anatinae) which feed mainly on the surface, instead of diving. (Nikon D300 w 70-200 f2.8 @200 mm f4 1/400^th I.S.O. 500)

2013 12 18 – Ice covers what remains of the new apartment building that was under construction at the corner of Victoria Street and Princess Street after yesterday’s fire burned it down. (Nikon D7000 w 70-200 f2.8 @174mm f4 1/400^th I.S.O. 200)

2013 12 19 – A hand painted ornament hangs on our Christmas tree. This is the first year we have had a fake Christmas tree. The first fake Christmas trees were made with goose feathers died green. (Nikon D7000 w 55f2.8 macro @55mm f2.8 1/0.3^rd I.S.O. 200)

2013 12 20 – Shoal Tower stands amongst the empty marina at Confederation Basin downtown as ducks, ice and snow surround it.  (Nikon D300 w 70-200 f2.8 @98mm f2.8 1/1000^th I.S.O. 400)

2013 12 21 – Cars and trees are covered in ice along Dunham Street after a day of freezing rain. Freezing rain is expected to continue throughout the night with the possibility of upwards to 2 inches of ice being added. (Nikon D7000 w 55 f2.8 Macro @55mm f8 8sec I.S.O. 400)

2013 12 22 – Ice covers a tree outside of the Frontenac Court House after Kingston was hit by an ice storm, the worst since 1998. Approximately 350,000 Ontarians were left in the dark and the storm continued to the east coast. (Nikon D300 w 17-35 f2.8 @17mm f4 1/500^th I.S.O. 200)

With Christmas just over a week away and being busy with exams this week, I thought Christmas lights made for an excellent theme. It is always nice to see the bright lights and every year there are certain houses that do an excellent job. Every photo is amalgamations of multiple photos in order to expose for the shadows while ensuring the highlights were not overblown.   

2013 12 09 – Light-emitting diode (LED) Christmas lights light up the front of the house. LEDs work by electroluminescence, the excitation of electrons emitting various wavelengths, as photons of energy. (Nikon D7000 w 17-35 f2.8 photo 1: @17mm f22 15 sec. 2013 12 10 – Christmas lights create a beautiful outline of a house off Sunny Acres Road. The discovery of electroluminescence, the first step towards LEDs, occurred in 1907 by H. J. Round using a silicon carbide crystal and a cat’s-whisker detector. The negative charge on the needle leads to a reaction with the positive charge of the silicon carbide, resulting in the release of photons of a particular wavelength within the visible light spectrum. 2013 12 11 – Every year this house off Woodside Drive decorates for the holidays. The world record for the most number of Christmas lights on a residential property is set by an Australian family in November 2013 with a total of 502,165 bulbs. 2013 12 12 – Every year this house on Union Street, East of Sir John A. MacDonald Boulevard, creates a beautiful display of lights. 2013 12 13 – The Emerald Adult Community Centre is beautifully lit up for the holidays. It was in 1882 when the first set of Christmas lights were wired together by Edison’s friend, Edward H. Johnson. (Nikon D7000 w 17-35 f2.8 @19mm f16 (1^st: 4 sec 2^nd: 15 sec) I.S.O. 200)

2013 12 14 – Candy cane lights line the driveway of this nicely decorated house off Speers Boulevard in Amherstview. The first account of a candy cane goes back to 1670 when a choirmaster at the Cologne Cathedral in Germany devised a way to keep children quite during worship. He decided to have it bent in order to remind the children of the shepherds that visited to Jesus.  (Nikon D7000 w 17-35 f2.8 @19mm (1^st: 10 sec. 2^nd: 30 sec.) I.S.O. 200 (-25°C)

2013 12 15 – Every year this house off Keenan Drive decorates for Christmas. The tradition of placing lights in the windows is rooted in Irish history. During the British persecution of the Catholic Church in Ireland families would display lights in their windows as a sign to priests they were welcome. This past week was my week off prepping for exams. It was nice to get away from studying to see what I could find and photograph. Each day I would think about where and when I was going to photograph. Some days I had the time to go adventuring, some days I planned to take a night photo because I was busy all day. Here are the photos from week 49 of 2013, 27^th week photographing daily. 

2013 12 02 – Alex makes her way to the top of one of the bouldering walls at the Boiler Room. Monday nights the Boiler Room in conjunction with the Queen’s Climbing Club runs a bouldering work out session.

2013 12 03 – Ice builds up along the coast of the Adolphus Reach just before the Glenora Ferry, a part of the Bay of Quinte. A reach is a stretch of water visible between bends in a river or channel. (Nikon D7000 w 70-200f2.8 @90mm f4.5 1/250^th I.S.O 400)

2013 12 04 – Shoal tower at Confederation Basin stands amongst an empty harbour, as the boats are out for the season.  The tower is one of four built in the 1840’s to protect Kingston from potential threats from the Rideau Canal.

2013 12 05 – The skating pad at Springer Market Square is empty as water coats the surface after a mild day. In 2004 the square was renovated and a refrigerated ice surface was installed. (Nikon D7000 w 17-35f2.8  @17mm f20 20sec. I.S.O. 100)

2013 12 06 - A nativity scene is set up outside the Saint Paul The Apostle Parish on Taylor Kidd Boulevard. Saint Francis of Assisi, an Italian Catholic friar and preacher, is credited as the first to depict the nativity scene in 1223.

2013 12 07 – Kingston Carolers fill the air with holiday tunes at Springer Markets Square. Every Saturday from November 30^th to December 21^st 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Santa will be at the square. (Nikon D7000 w 17-35f2.8 @17mm f8 1/250^th I.S.O. 200)

2013 12 07 – Ice creates a unique patterns along the Kingston and Pembroke Railway (K&P) trail between BurBrook/Cordukes Road entrance and Unity Road. The K&P offers 14.6 kilometres of hiking starting from Cataraqu Creek at the 401 to Orser Road.

The last week of school was filled with a mixture of weather and the finishing of classes. It appeared as though winter was on its way, as we got our first snow fall, 15 centimetres. Remaining cold for a few days afterwards, mild temperatures have moved back in. Here are the photos from week 26, half a year of photographing on a daily basis. 

2013 11 25 – Students walk and bike down Alfred Street during a cold day in Kingston, as snow sweeps across the street.  No parking on the streets between 1:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. starting December 1^st through till March 31^st.

2013 11 26 – Queen’s students walk along University Avenue after classes, as wet snow falls during the beginning of this year’s first winter storm. On average Kingston sees 12 centimetres of snow in November and 81 millimetres of rain.

2013 11 27 – A group of Queen’s students throw snowballs after this year’s first snowstorm. As temperatures go above 0 degC, water occurs within the snow, allowing cohesion. If temperatures are below 0, making snowballs become very difficult.

2013 11 28 – Snow clings to a tree with a beautiful blue sky in the background. The coldest days tend to be clear days corresponding to a high-pressure system.

2013 11 29 – Fog rises over Horse Bay on a cold morning at the end of Bayridge Drive in Kingston, Ontario.

2013 11 30 – Queen’s Gaels #5 (Stephane Chabot), #10 (Joey Derochie) & #17 (Chris Van Laren) help defend the net as Ottawa Gee-Gees #7 (Matthieu Tanguay-Theriault) attempts to score during a regular season Ontario University Athletics home game. The game went into overtime after regular play ended 3-3, with no goal in overtime, Queen’s defeated Ottawa in the shoot out.

2013 12 01 – Queen’s Student Constables enjoy the semester end dinner social at Clark Hall; turkey, pizza, salads and numerous desserts filled the tables.
