Started off the week in Kingston and ended it in Kingston, as I returned from my summer working in Bancroft. Some good photos and some not so good but here are the photos from my 13^th week, just over three months of photographing on a daily basis. 

2013 08 26 – Construction workers use an asphalt grinder to cut a straight flat edge before fully paving University Avenue. Before pavers can lay the final asphalt, the temporary slope, making driving easier, must be removed and a sharp flat surface must be made. 

2013 08 27 – A reese’s blizzard sits on the Dairy Queen counter before it magically disappeared into my mouth. In 1928 a former dairy farmer created the yummy peanut butter cups and in 1940 the first Dairy Queen opened in Joliet, Illinois. Now both can be enjoyed in a cold delicious dessert. 

2013 08 28 – Chris Hayward performs during the last of the Mineral Capital Concerts, as Howard plays the base in the background. Every Wednesday evening different performers have taken to the stage at Millennium Park. More information on Chris Hayward: https://www.facebook.com/Chrishaywardmusic

2013 08 29 – A group of mineral collectors on tour at Millar’s Mine near Tory Hill look for Tremolite. Tremolite is a member of the amphibole group; it is formed by the metamorphism of dolomite, silica and water. 

2013 08 30 – Two girls perform a duet during Maynooth’s Got Talent at the Arlington Pub, a kick-start event to Maynooth Madness. In its 21^st year numerous events occur orientated towards logging and farming.

2013 08 31 – Fifteen competitors mow down on wings during the first annual wing eating competition at the South Algonquin Eatery and Pub in Bancroft, Ontario. A total of 325 wings were consumed with the winner eating 30 in 10 minutes winning a pair of tickets to a blue jays game. 

2013 09 01 – A student moves into Vic Hall at Queen’s University during Move In Day. Queen’s University has a total of 9,932 full time undergraduate students enrolled in Arts and Science, according to Queen’s University website.

This past week was eventful with the Coe Hill fair Friday night, the pig roast Saturday followed by karaoke and Toronto on Sunday for the first football game of the 2013 season. Life will soon get busier with frosh week in less then a week. Can’t wait for that week of photos but until then; enjoy last week’s photos.

2013 08 19  - The sunsets as I drive back to Bancroft. According to the Internet there was 13 hours and 43 minutes of daylight with the sun setting around 8:03 p.m.

2013 08 20 – People on tour with the Bancroft and District Chamber of Commerce sort through the CN Rock Pile off Station Street in Bancroft. The material is from the Goulding-Keen Quarry mined in the early 1900’s for nepheline.

2013 08 21 – A dog looks out towards the crowd as spectators watch David Francey, a Scottish-born Canadian folk singer perform. A good crowd came out for the second last Mineral Capital Concerts. For more information on David Francey check this link: http://www.davidfrancey.com/press.html

2013 08 22 – A large American Bullfrog at Marble Lake in Bancroft, Ontario. Was photographing a smaller frog when it jumped away and saw this one hiding under the dock.

2013 08 23 – A mother and daughter watch on as people ride the “Ring of Fire,” an amusement ride at the Coe Hill Fair. Many people came out to enjoy the fair, which has been running since 1882.

2013 08 24 – Over a hundred people attended this year’s pig roast at the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp. Every year they hold the event starting off the evening with a dinner, complete with salad, beans and dessert, followed by karaoke.

2013 08 25 – Giovanni Aprile (11) takes the last few strides just before making the first touch down of many during Sunday’s football game against the York Lions in Toronto. Queen’s ended up winning the game 52-1.

This past week’s photos had no consistency, a jumble of various events and subjects. The photos mimic the way the week went, as one thing after another went on. Nothing bad happened, the usual, go on tours, come back and do things in Bancroft. Here are the photos from last week’s photos: 

 

2013 08 12 – A homemade Sicilian pizza with an assortment of peppers, pepperoni, tomatoes and onion is about to be cooked. Got the recipe a few years back from one of my relatives in New Brunswick.

2013 08 13 – Two young kids remove soil around a large boulder at the MacDonald Mine near Bancroft, Ontario. They were trying to remove the boulder but were unable to, as it extended deep into the soil. MacDonald mine was in operation in the early 1900’s for feldspar. 

2013 08 14 – A member of The Heavyweights Brass Band plays the trumpet while performing at the Mineral Capital Concerts on Wednesday evening. For more information on the band check out their website: http://www.heavyweightsbrassband.com/band.html

2013 08 15 – While digging at Millar’s Mine, Tory Hill I came across this spotted salamander. Female spotted salamanders can lie up to 100 eggs on the underside of a water plant.

2013 08 16 – One of the kids at the campground takes photos during a potluck.

2013 08 17 – One of the groups on Saturday’s mineral tour poses for a photo at the CN Rock Pile our first location for the day. It is amazing how much work collectors have done to the Schickler Fluorite collecting site, the main location for the day.

2013 08 18 – A lady feeds the seagulls and ducks at Confederation Park in front of City Hall off Ontario Street.

Photographing at night offers a unique look at everyday things. What might look mundane during the day comes to life with different types of lights, casting unique shadows. Here are this past week’s photos with the theme of night photography.

2013 08 05 – The first train to arrive at the Bancroft Train Station was in November 1900 with the last one to leave in 1975. Since then a fire almost destroyed the station and in 2006 it was condemned due to age. In the last few months after renovations and an entire uplift it once again opened as the information centre and hosting the new mineral museum.

2013 08 06 – After moving campsites for the Gemboree, I am back at my original spot at the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp. This was the first night that I have had a campfire. Having to photograph a night photo, I decided to have fun with the flash, doing some light painting.  

2013 08 07 – The Milky Way lines the sky as a storm rumbles on in the distance. Sever thunderstorms rolled on through the region with a tornado touching down north of Orillia. Although the top of the storm was visible, the closest one was down in Marmora.

2013 08 08 – A good crowd attends Summer Movie Mania: Madagascar III put on by Youth in Action. Every Thursday evening they show a movie at Millennium Park with next week’s being Escape From Planet Earth and the August 22^nd being Star Treck. $5 admittance

2013 08 09 – A couple at the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp pose for a photograph while having a fire.

2013 08 10 – Many of those staying at the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp enjoyed the music last night at the Gazebo after a fun day of kids events. The camp holds events every weekend from a mock Fear Factor to Christmas In July.

2013 08 11 – The Isabel Bader Centre of the Performing Arts, located along Kingston’s waterfront with some of Ontario’s oldest heritage sites, is expected to be open in 2014.

This past week I was able to keep with a theme for the most part. There were some slight adjustments, such as incorporating amphibians. The first day was not going to fit; I did not have a theme at that time.  

Themes are an excellent way to make you think about what you want to photograph. It causes you to explore new areas and keep your eyes open for particular scenarios. As my past teacher told us at Loyalist College in Belleville: Think, Think, Shoot, Think (Something along those lines). 

2013 07 29 – A person walks along University Avenue at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario. There are approximately 21,500 students that go to Queen’s with approximately 76% of the students coming from Ontario.

2013 07 30 – A carpenter ant walks across some foliage examining some small insects. The carpenter ant gets its name from its preferred living locality, inside wood.

2013 07 31 – A bumblebee tries to get nectar out of a flower at the garden in Millennium Park, Bancroft. There are over 250 different species of bumblebees belonging to the genus Bombus. They are well known by their yellow and black bodies but can be orange, red and sometimes completely black.

2013 08 01 – A milkweed beetle perches on top of a leaf behind Foodland in Bancroft. Commonly found on milkweed, which is their predominant diet, they are toxic to other animals. The red colour is aposematic trait warning other animals they are toxic to consume.

2013 08 02 – A very fascinating pattern on this American toad found at Craigmont Mines, Craigmont. A close species is the Fowler’s Toad but it is found in extreme southern Ontario. The Fowler’s Toad has a white under belly, where as the American Toad is white with black spots.

2013 08 03 – Attempting to flip over a decaying log revealed a hornet’s nest when it split in half. Waiting about five minutes numerous Bald-faced hornets started crawling out. Supposedly the females defend the hive by stinging repeatedly but none of them came after me. That is why I was able to take this photograph a few inches away. 

2013 08 04 – A leopard frog sits beside a pond at the Rose Quartz Quarry in Quadeville, Ontario. They are found across North America from Canada to Mexico and in Europe.

This week started off with a theme and then went array. I was thinking of photographing insects everyday but got busy with the various activities that went on in the week such as tours, the opening of the museum and the local mineral show. Anyways, here are the photos from this past week, week number eight.

2013 07 22 – The larvae of a water beetle eats a small snail on Marble Lake. There are over 2000 species of water beetles.

2013 07 24 – Beautiful cirrus clouds are seen reflecting in a pond off Cross-Country Road near Musclow-Greenview Road east of Bancroft.

2013 07 25 – A group walks down a slope at the MacDonald Mine north of Bancroft. The mine, which opened in 1919, was one of the largest Feldspar mines in Canada. It has since been rehabilitated, covering up the large openings with debris material. A concrete tunnel does lead into the openings for bats and is barred off.

2013 07 26 – As the fire dies down the embers glow red while enjoying a campfire with Doug and Donna at the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp. Embers are around 500 degrees Celsius.

2013 07 27 – Someone takes a photos of various members associated with the opening of the new mineral museum in Bancroft. The museum officially opened on Sunday, July 28^th, the day of the local club’s mineral show.

2013 07 28 – A couple examine some of the minerals available to purchase at the Bancroft Gem and Mineral Club’s 17^th annual show at the Legion. The show features three silent auctions and a live auction at the end of the day.

Finishing up my 7^th week photographing on a daily basis exciting things continue to happen. This week Ontario was hit by a massive front, causing power outages across the province.  As a result temperatures broke, creating excellent weather for the weekend, making mineral collecting and the South Baptist Music Festival enjoyable. Here are the photos:

2013 07 15 – Every year I enjoy seeing what new graffiti is added to the wall behind Camera Kingston off Wellington Street. The mice were added some time ago but the colourful circle is a newer addition. 

2013 07 16 – Wendy writes a label for a Fluorrichterite sample to be placed on display in the new mineral museum at 8 Hasting Heritage Way, Bancroft. The new museum has a wide array of minerals collected within 150 km radius of Bancroft, as well as a mine diorama and fluorescent mineral display. The opening date is scheduled for July 28^th.

2013 07 17 – Fraser Creek, made up of Richard Arthur, Howard Baer and Brad Culver, performs during the Mineral Capital Concerts at Millennium Park. Every Wednesday evening a different performer takes to the stage at 7:00 p.m. ending around 9:00 p.m.

2013 07 18 – One of the servers pours in a shot of whiskey while making a mixed drink on Thursday night, half price wing night. The South Algonquin Eatery and Pub, one of the area’s newest restaurant establishments opened in spring 2013, located at 4 Bridge West, Bancroft, Ontario.

2013 07 19 – Got the pot ready and was about to cook pasta last night on my electric burner when I realized, “oh ya, the power is out,” so I used the stove. A storm rolled through the area yesterday knocking out the power to 14,000 people in the Hastings Township. It was around 9:40 p.m. when it came back on.

2013 07 20 – A gentleman maneuvers his Sea-Doo at the boat launch behind the Country Fare and Inn during the 2^nd Annual South Baptist Music Festival. The choppy water made it difficult for boats to float and enjoy the festival.

2013 07 21 – Vic and Tristan work under the rock face, looking for a wide variety of minerals, at the Schickler Fluorite mine near Wilberforce. The site recently opened to collectors after Michael Bainbridge worked out the logistics. Many different minerals are collectable: Titanite, Scapolite, Apatite, Amphibole, Fluorite and possibly others.
