This past week permitted a lot of adventures from caving to ghost towns and mineral show. It was amazing getting back to the Bonnechere Caves, as well as checking out the old abandoned radar station at Foymount. This week ended strong with the annual Prince Edward Country Rock and Mineral Show in Picton. Hope you enjoy this past week’s photos.

2013 07 08 – Workers apply a coating to the Bronze Sir John A statue in City Park at the corner of King Street and West Street. The first Prime Minister of Canada holding office from 1867-73 and 1878-91.

2013 07 09 – Beautiful cumulus clouds fill the sky above Foodland at 337 Hastings Street North in Bancroft. Foodland opened in May of 2011, a branch of Sobeys Ontario. They are open 24/7, making it a convenient place to shop if you need something at the last minute.

2013 07 10 – A women enjoys relaxing in her hammock while listening to the Cris Cuddy Acoustic Unit (CCAU) perform at the Mineral Capital Concert. Every Wednesday night a performer takes to the stage at 7:00 p.m. at Millennium Park.

2013 07 11 - A group of collectors looks through the soil at Millar’s Mine near Tory Hill while out on one of the Bancroft and District Chamber of Commerce Mineral Tours. The particular section of the property they are looking at is good for Tremolite, a light green coloured amphibole.

2013 07 12 – In 1955 the Bonnechere Caves were drained of water and people were able to explore passageways that were once submerged. This is one of the tunnels produced by rushing water, dissolving away the limestone walls. If you’ve never been in a cave and want a comfortable introduction, the Bonnechere Caves are excellent. http://www.bonnecherecaves.com

2013 07 12 - Foymount, Ontario was the site of one of the Royal Canadian Airforce radar stations built in the 1950's, keeping watch for Soviet bombers. The main buildings remain, looking like a post apocalyptic landscape, while newer houses are located close by. Numerous no trespassing sign cover the property.

2013 07 13 – A good number of campers attended this year’s Christmas in July dinner at the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp. They served up ham, scalloped potatoes, mixed vegetables and buns. The scalloped potatoes were excellent, along with all the other food as well. 

2013 07 14 – Two people examine one of the vendors at the 2^nd annual Prince Edward County Rock, Gem and Mineral Show in Picton at the Crystal Palace. A wide variety of minerals, fossils, gems and jewelry were on display for sale.

Canada Day started off the week with some excitement, as kids and adults showed their patriotism. On days like that it is easy to get a photo, the difficult part is choosing what photo to use. As good as one day can be, the next can be difficult. You get caught up in what you are doing and forget to take a photo, so with an hour left in the day, you think of something to photograph.

Here is this past week’s photos, hope you enjoy.

2013 07 01 – A lady smiles after getting her face painted at Millennium Park in Bancroft during the Canada Day celebrations. Live music, vendors and face painting filled the park, while other events for kids went on at Riverside Park.

2013 07 02 – The only issue with tenting for the summer is the humidity; with warm days and cooler nights it leaves everything damp. Currently have a large fan going and keep moving stuff around to combat the dampness.

2013 07 03 – A group examines a freshly blasted rock at the Princess Sodalite Mine while on tour of the area’s geology. Alf uses the micro-blaster to break down a boulders from the old dumps to more manageable sizes.

2013 07 04 – A young snapping turtle was walking across the road so I decided to move it. This snapping turtle was not aggressive, allowing me to put the lens up close enough to get a good close up photo. It hid when I picked it up.

2013 07 05 – A group of friends enjoy the beautiful sunset while fishing off the dock at Moira Lake off Highway 62 south of Madoc.

2013 07 06 – Unsure of what exactly happened but the truck lost control, flipped over and took out the front of a white cargo van before landing on this front lawn in Birds Creek. Talking to a few people it was a chain reaction of events, someone not paying attention and having to react quickly, and everyone walked away without injury. 

2013 07 07 – A lady sits on one of the benches at Flora MacDonald Confederation Basin on Sunday afternoon, while others enjoy the nice weather. Located in the park is Engine 1095, a locomotive that recently was restored, for more information on it click this link: http://www.cityofkingston.ca/explore/history/engine-1095

A lot has happened over this past week from white water rafting to the first Mineral Capital Concert and the first celebrations of Canada Day. The weather has been all over the place but it has been a fun week. Here are the photos from week 26, 2013. 

2013 06 24 – It is the newest tourist attraction starting next Monday, July 1^st. Madawaska Kanu Centre, the Bancroft District Chamber of Commerce and TROUT Bus Lines have partnered in a weekly Monday afternoon White Water Rafting adventure. Price includes transportation, lunch and a fun time on the rapids.

2013 06 25 – A mid day thunderstorm rolled through Bancroft around noon dumping a lot of water within a short period of time. This is a view from the north-facing window of the Chamber of Commerce. It created some good washed out sections at the campground I’m staying at, as well as temporarily flooding Station Street (only about half a foot of water).

2013 06 26 – Spectators watch as the Salty Dog take to the stage during last night’s opening performance for this year’s Mineral Capital Concerts at Millennium Park. Various musicians will be performing this year every Wednesday evening starting at 7:00 p.m. Next week’s performance will be Jamie Spurvey (http://www.liveonmystage.com/jamiespurvey.html)

2013 06 27 – Looking out from the Eagle’s Nest in Bancroft a small thunderstorm slowly moves by. Very little lightning was produced by the storm and it never made its way to Bancroft. The Eagle’s Nest provides a nice lookout point over the Bancroft landscape.

2013 06 28 – Today a freelance writer who specializes in kid related adventures came to Bancroft. She is writing a piece on geological tourism, so I took her and her two kids out to the Marble Quarry on Highway 62. The two kids enjoyed the Marble Quarry quite a bit, throwing water on the walls to bring out the beauty of the marble.

2013 06 29 – Every year the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp hosts a fundraising barbeque on the Saturday of the Canada Day weekend. Alex made the barbeque from a diesel tank and the latest retrofit is a rotating platform for burgers and hot dogs. Approximately 100 attended this year’s and enjoyed the live music.

2013 06 30 – The day before Canada Day, the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp has a kids decorating bike contest. Approximately 30 kids were out, after going through the photos, I thought this stood out because of her expression.

Week 35 started off behind the desk working on the new guide but then turned into adventures traveling around the Bancroft area, checking out mines and collecting some minerals. After a fun week it ended traveling back to Kingston for the weekend. Here are the photos from this past week.  

--> 2013 06 17 – Papers and binders are spread across the desk that I work at, at the Bancroft and District Chamber of Commerce. The binder is open to the new mineral guide, a section of the overall guide, hopefully to be done by the end of next week.

2013 06 18 – A beautiful white horse stands in the field in front of a barn off Farr Road near Wilberforce. They were very friendly and a gentleman informed me that they are for a riding school.

2013 06 19 – A garter snake weaves its way through the under brush at the Schickler mine near Wilberforce, Ontario. The garter snake is the state reptile for Massachusetts.

2013 06 20 – An American bullfrog sits along the edge of a pond at the Burgess Mine in Carlow Township. This large frog is commonly used for food and is native to the southern and eastern regions of the United States and Canada. It has been introduced worldwide.

2013 06 21 – Chris and another gentleman plaster the walls as they work on the mock mine for the mineral museum at the Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce at 8 Hasting Heritage Way. The museum is planned to open mid July.

2013 06 22 – An Audi TT is parked on the freshly paved lot at Metro with the new TD bank in the background, expected to open this coming week. The Audi TT was released in 1998.

2013 06 23 – A family canoes past the newly done Lake Ontario Park, which had its grand opening today. The new park has been outfitted with a beach volleyball court, a splash pad and a nice network of new pathways.

Once again another week is complete. Each week seems to fly by, with new adventures and new stories. Photographing on a daily basis or writing permits these adventures to live on a little longer. Here are the photos from my second week of photographing on a daily basis.   

2013 06 10 – An Alexander Keith’s Red Amber Ale sits on our table at East Side Mario’s while we enjoy the half price appetizers after 9:00 p.m. Alexander Keith’s was founded in 1820 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

2013 06 11 – It has been over 6 years since casting a fishing rod. Decided to get my old rod out and take a few casts at Collins Bay. There are two types of fishing licenses you can buy: sport license and conservation license.

2013 06 12 - A painted turtle wonders along Boulter Road during Wednesday's sunny weather. Adult turtles in the wild can live upwards to 55 years.

2013 06 13 – A snapping turtle looks for a place to lay her eggs along Gibson Road at Tory Hill. They can be found as far west as the Rockies, east to Nova Scotia and as far south as Mexico.

2013 06 14 – A spotted salamander is found near Tory Hill, Ontario. These larger salamanders are nocturnal and eat a wide variety of insect, finding one in the middle of the day is unusual.

2013 06 15 – Two kids try to get close to a deer standing along the side of Monck Street (HWY 28) across the road from the OPP station, west side of Bancroft.

2013 06 16 – The main frame of a barn stands in a field east of Peterborough off HWY 28. Thought it looked cool so I photographed it.

After checking the internet I am unsure who started it but several years back someone thought of the idea to take a photograph every day for 365 day, "Project 365." I'm hoping to make a little adjustment and take a photo a day for as long as I can go. This might be a little bit ambitious so I'm going to approach it with bench markers, such as a month, a year and so on. Anyways here is the first week of photos.

2013 06 03 - Eating supper (bagel with turkey, lettuce, mustard and cheese) in the dinning tent at the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp.

2013 06 04 - One of the lakes West of Bancroft, Ontario along Highway 28. (Will get the name)

2013 06 05 - Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp located at 27366 Hwy 62, 3 km south of Bancroft is home for the next three months. It use to be a KOA.

2013 06 06 - A doe stands out in the swamp off Musclow-Greenview Road near Bancroft, Ontario. In old english "Deor" refered to any wild animal, it was not until early English that the word took on the meaning of this particular animal.

2013 06 07 - The tent at 11:30 p.m. at the Bancroft Tent and Trailer Camp.

2013 06 08 - The bolts we were screwing in to make the ramp into the Bancroft & District Chamber of Commerce.

2013 06 09 - A caterpillar at Miller Mine near Tory Hill, Ontario. Unsure what type of caterpillar, there are so many.

Kingston 2013 Thunderstorm

Kingston 2013 Thunderstorm (May 23rd)

Tonight an amazing thunderstorm rolled through the region around 10:00 p.m. Attempting to photograph it at the 1000 Islands cruise lines, here in Kingston, Ontario, the wind and rain picked up to a level I was unable to work in. 

Watching the rain sweep across the front window of the car and seeing the night sky light up like high powered strobes, the storm began to settle down. Changing up locations, I drove over to the Cataraqui Canoe Club. Moments later the rain almost stopped and the lightning was putting on quite a show across the bay. Here are the best photographs from this evening.
